PLANT INFO: Kauri trees are among the largest and oldest trees in New Zealand, known for their height and impressive girth. Kauri can attain heights of 40–50 metres (130–160 ft).

Unfortunatly heavy logging, which began around 1820 and continued for a century, has considerably decreased the number of kauri trees. It has been estimated that before 1840, the kauri forests of northern New Zealand occupied at least 12,000 square kilometres.

SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: 'Courage, Strength and Resilience'

Kauri trees are considered taonga (treasure). The health of kauri is a sign of general well being of the ngahere (forest) and the people. Kauri have connections for many Māori to Tāne, the god (atua) of the forest. The story of the Kauri spirit highlights the importance of creating space for life to grow.
